Frequently asked questions

What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

"Clinical neuropsychology is a specialty profession that focuses on brain functioning. A clinical neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist with expertise in how behavior and skills are related to brain structures and systems. In clinical neuropsychology, brain function is evaluated by objectively testing memory and thinking skills." (APA Division 40).

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Get a good night’s rest and have a nourishing meal prior to the appointment. Bring your glasses, hearing aids, or other supportive devices that will help you with paper/pencil and listening tasks. Discontinue using substances of abuse and avoid sedating medications on the morning of testing. Ask Dr. Jacobson if you should use your prescribed stimulant medications on the day of testing. Bring any water or snacks you may need during the lengthy testing appointment.

How much does an evaluation cost?

Dr. Jacobson charges a flat fee for neuropsychological assessments. The scope of the assessment will be determined based on the referral question and information gathered during the initial consultation and clinical interview. Please ask about current rates. You may also ask whether your family income may qualify you for a sliding scale adjustment.

Do you accept insurance?

Dr. Jacobson is a fee-for-service provider and does not accept any forms of insurance. She would be happy to provide you with a “superbill” to submit to your insurance carrier for possible reimbursement. Please check with your carrier about whether any pre-authorizations are required and to determine if your claim may be accepted. Provision of a superbill does not guarantee reimbursement.

How will I know how much I have to pay?

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” (GFE) explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical/mental health services. Make sure your health care provider gives you a GFE in writing at least one business day before your medical/mental health visit.

You can ask Dr. Jacobson for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule the visit. Make sure to save a copy of your GFE. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your GFE, you can dispute the bill.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.

What forms of payment are accepted?

We accept cash, check, and most major credit cards.
